Sandstone Ranch Cliffs

I painted this view of these sandstone cliffs at Sandstone Ranch in Longmont, Colorado. This piece required two plein air sessions with additional studio work in order to achieve the depth and drama I envisioned. My husband thinks the rock formations resemble the massive stone head sculptures on Easter Island and I tend to agree. I especially enjoyed the contrasts between the warm and cool colors in the rock faces against the cool overcast sky.

Waneka Lake

On a partly cloudy summer morning I set up to paint from the south shore of Waneka Lake near the boathouse. Ducks paddled among the branches overhanging the lake edge. Children laughed and screamed in the nearby playground. Joggers ran laps around the lake, while families set up picnic lunches beneath towering cottonwoods. Altogether a joyful respite. Read More
