The Abyss is the deepest sheer drop-off along the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. The Great Mohave Wall plunges a breathtaking 3000 feet to the Tonto Platform below. Our first morning exploring the South Rim the canyon was obscured by fog and rolling rain clouds, making it impossible to see the depth of The Abyss. We returned later to find the sun breaking through and lighting the distant formations along with the nearest walls. Cloud shadows deepened and intensified the hues of the middle ground cliffs. The Colorado River glowed an acid green as it snaked through the canyon below. Imagine the stories of ancient spirits rising up from the depths.
