Cherry Blossoms National Capital Park

We traveled with our sons when they were in grade school to Washington, DC, and were thrilled to find that the Japanese cherry trees were in full bloom. Our sons joyfully danced under the cherry blossoms in spite of a rainy day. In this latest painting in my National Parks series I am experimenting with more impressionistic brushstrokes of broken color in the blossoms. Aware of the importance of negative space in traditional Japanese prints, I am focusing on the pattern created by the pale blue sky holes among the trees while leading the eye through the blossoms with stepping stones of brighter yellowish petals layered over deeper pink, orchid, and coral hues. This results in a vibrant feeling of sunlight glimmering through the cherry blossoms. Read More
