Artist’s
Statement After twenty years of painting my work has developed a unique and distinctive stylized realism. I perceive simplified shapes, intensified colors and dramatic contrast between light and dark values. My newest oil paintings focus on architecture and landscapes with local and regional appeal. My series of European scenes were inspired by my summer trip to London, Paris, and surrounding areas. I love the enduring elegance and rich tradition of oil portraiture. I also enjoy the spontaneity, transparency and the brilliant, vibrant hues of watercolors. In each painting I capture the expression of the model or the essence of the scene. I have been influenced by the work of John Singer Sargent, Winslow Homer, Edward Hopper, Mary Cassatt, and Georgia O’Keeffe.
About the Artist
My interest in drawing and painting began as a young child growing up in
Fayetteville, Arkansas, where my first art lessons were taught by Virginia
Cammack.
My education includes a Home Economics degree from the University of Arkansas
and a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Oklahoma.
I have studied in Arkansas, Montana, California, Alabama, and Colorado
from such artists as Michael Untiedt, Donnave Lindsey, Jake Wagnon, Rick Mills,
Morris Shubin, and Loren Kovich.
I studied oil portraiture from Daniel E. Greene in his North Salem, New York
studio and with Peggy Baumgaertner in Asheville, North Carolina. My works have been included in International, national, and regional juried shows including the "International Water-media Exhibition" at University of Colorado at Colorado Springs, Limner Gallery/Small Works in New York City, "Lines into Shapes" at Art Center of Estes Park, Louisville National Show at Louisville Art Center, Meridian Museum of Art/ Peoples’ Choice Art Competition, Montgomery Museum of Fine Art / Alabama Landscapes Show, Montgomery Art Guild/ Regions Bank Show, Selma Art Guild/ Peoples’ Bank Show, Nightingale Biennial Show at Auburn University of Montgomery School of Nursing, “Paint the Waterfront” Show at South Trust Bank in Union Station, and the National Art Exhibition for Women in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
My goal is to express how deeply my life is enriched by appreciation of the arts
including architecture, design, dance, drama, and music.
As I incorporate other forms of creativity into my painting, I grow in
sensitivity and perception as an artist.
Over 220 of my paintings are in private and business collections in Washington
DC, Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Montana, Texas, Japan, and
elsewhere. |
